Spring brings sunshine and warmer weather. It also brings two threats to your property from two pests that awaken in spring: raccoons and mosquitoes.

Raccoons

Raccoons typically spend winter in small burrows and nests or under your porch or deck. Come February and March, they begin to wake up and seek out mates for breeding. With a gestation period of just 63 days, mothers are also looking for somewhere safe and warm away from the elements and predators to have their babies. Your home’s crawl spaces, attics, sheds, garages, and other protected areas become prime real estate. They often access your rooftop by climbing something nearby (trees, vines, downspouts, etc) and entering your home through the chimney. If they gain access to your home you will likely see damage to your homes wood, shingles, electrical wiring, walls, and insulation, as well as droppings and urine stains. Hearing loud thuds and noises can also signify there are raccoons in your home.

Mosquitos

Rotting leaves, branches, and debris accumulate over the winter months in your downspouts and gutters, causing standing water to accumulate in the gutter system. This becomes the perfect breeding grounds and habitat for cockroaches, ants, gnats, flies, spiders, worms, termites, and disease-carrying mosquitoes. Once temperatures begin to stay above the 50 degree mark, mosquitos begin to lay their eggs in standing water (also frequently found in flowerpots, kiddie pools, birdbaths, etc). The larvae will then hatch and mature into adult mosquitoes. Its important to keep your gutters clean during all seasons, but its especially important to clear them out in late winter or early spring, because while mosquitoes are definitely annoying, they are also a public health risk.
