Summer is a great time for many things like picnics, trips to the beach, and barbecues. It is also the time of year when a lot of critters like bats, raccoons, and opossums are extra active and out to play for the summer as well.

Bats

There are at least 16 species of bats in Georgia, including the most common Big Brown Bat (Eptesicus fuscus) and Little Brown Bat (Myotis lucifugus). Bats play an important role in our ecosystem by consuming insects, such as disease-spreadingmosquitoesand agriculture-damaging moths and beetles. A single bat can eat between 600 and 1000 insects every hour! Their elimination of so many insects is just one of the reasons why bats are protected under both federal and state laws.

Opossums

Opossums are known for some of their strange characteristics like their naked tails, 50 sharp teeth (more than any mammal in North America), and the fact they are North America’s only marsupials. These creatures may be disliked for their strange looks but they are wonderful at pest control. They are loved by gardeners for their diet of snails, slugs, and beetles. They often compete for food with rats and cockroaches at bay which generally deters the rats and cockroaches away from an area, but it’s also common for opossums to kill cockroaches and rats in their territory.

Raccoons

The nocturnal masked bandits may look cute but they often carry the rabies virus and their droppings are dangerous to humans. They typically reside near wooded lots but they love to live and raise their young in our homes. You should be especially aware if you have seen a raccoon near your home or business, because they are likely looking for a way into your home or other structure. They will often access rooftops by climbing anything located near your home (trees, vines, down spouts, etc) and a very common entry point is down the chimney.
